|text=The link count for directories is traditionally used to count the number of subdirectores iff the link count is >= 2. Btrfs sets this to 1 and does not track the link count at all. The link count could be used by some utilities to do optimizations when traversing the file hierarchy (at least <tt>find</tt> does that).

It seems that the link count can be tracked like the other filesystems do. This will be even backward compatible:

* for new directories and subvolumes , set the initial link count to 2
* a mkdir/rmdir/move/snapshot will update the link count accordingly iff the current link count is not 1
